Regular dental care is essential for the comfort and longevity of the horse.

Even if your horse does not show symptoms of dental problems, it’s likely that he has developed sharp points on his teeth which can interfere with his ability to chew hay and grain easily.

How often ?

The frequency of dental checks for horses does depend on age, as their dental needs change throughout their lives.

Foals ( 0 - 1 years old )

Initial check within the first year to assess for congenital issues (e.g. overbite, underbite).

Young horses ( 2 - 5 years old )

Every 6 months, this is a critical period because they're shedding baby teeth and growing permanent ones. Very important to do dental check before introducing bit for the first time.

Adult Horses (5–15 years)

Annually, unless specific problems are present.

At this stage, the teeth are more stable, but regular maintenance is still important to prevent issues like sharp points or uneven wear.

Senior Horses (15+ years)

Every 6 month, older horses are prone to tooth loss, wave mouth, and other age-related dental problems.

Signs of dental problems :

  • dropping food

  • weight loss

  • bad odour

  • bitting problems

  • head tilt or shaking

  • colic or choke

  • facial swelling

  • nasal discharggeg
